GKO Emmet County
A community-wide initiative, Getting Kids Outdoors is a coalition of organizations, businesses and individuals working to promote local programs and resources that will help our kids spend more time outdoors.
We believe that every child in Emmet County should have access, opportunities and encouragement to play outdoors and connect with nature for their physical, emotional and educational well being.
Mission:
To build a community-wide effort that embraces and promotes getting kids outdoors as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Goals:
Raise awareness that direct contact with nature is essential to the physical, mental and emotional health of all children.
Encourage exploration and play in the outdoors on a regular basis.
Promote existing programs in Emmet County for getting kids outdoors.
Connect parents, caregivers and teachers with opportunities, information and resources for getting kids outdoors.
Engage a diverse network of people, organizations and businesses and facilitate collaborations.
GKO Services:
Website – a “go to” source for parents, caregivers, teachers and kids.
Community Education – marketing materials, presentations and workshops.
Special Events – collaborative events and programs with coalition partners.

Coalition:
Getting Kids Outdoors inEmmet County is bringing the Leave No Child Inside movement to northern Michigan by forging collaborative partnerships with organizations and businesses in Emmet County. We function as a coalition of partners from various sectors of the local community including:
Healthcare providers
Public and private schools
Daycare and preschools
Youth organizations
Public park and recreation agencies
Urban planners and developers
Environmental organizations
Private businesses
Faith-based communities
